How painful is liposuction recovery?

Medically reviewed by Dr. Paulo Michels · Brazilian board-certified plastic surgeon · 6 min read · Updated July 2026

Liposuction recovery consultation with Dr. Paulo Michels, plastic surgeon in Abu Dhabi, explaining post-operative soreness and the compression garment

The honest answer: liposuction recovery is usually described as discomfort rather than real pain — a deep soreness much like the ache after an intense workout. It is strongest in the first few days, is managed with simple medication, and then fades steadily; most patients are up and walking the same day and back at a desk within about a week.

What does liposuction recovery actually feel like?

Patients rarely use the word “pain” when they describe it afterwards. The dominant sensation in the first few days is mild soreness, like an intense workout — the treated areas feel tight, tender and bruised when you move, rather than sharp or stabbing. There is often a little fluid drainage from the tiny port sites at first, which settles quickly. Crucially, you are up and walking on the day of surgery itself; liposuction does not confine you to bed.

Why is modern liposuction less painful than people expect?

Two things at the operation itself set up a more comfortable recovery. The first is the anaesthesia: surgery is performed under general anaesthesia using TIVA (total intravenous anaesthesia), so you are fully asleep and wake without the procedure itself having been felt. The second is the technology: Dr. Paulo Michels uses VASER ultrasound-assisted liposuction, in which ultrasound gently liquefies the fat while sparing nerves and blood vessels. Because the fat is removed precisely and atraumatically, there is less bruising — and less bruising means a smoother, faster, more comfortable recovery.

How long does the soreness last?

The discomfort peaks in the first days and then fades. The milestones from there are consistent:

What can you do to make recovery more comfortable?

Three habits make the biggest difference. Wear the compression garment exactly as instructed — it controls swelling, supports the treated areas and makes moving noticeably more comfortable. Walk early and often; gentle movement helps the fluid settle and keeps you feeling like yourself. And keep your follow-up visits, so the team can confirm everything is settling as expected and adjust your plan — medication, garment, activity — to how your body is actually healing. Patients from Abu Dhabi & Dubai are seen and operated on at Elyzee Hospital in Abu Dhabi.

Frequently asked questions

Is liposuction painful afterwards?

Most patients describe soreness and tightness like an intense workout rather than real pain. It is strongest in the first few days, is controlled with simple medication, and fades steadily as swelling settles.

How many days off work do I need after liposuction?

Most patients return to desk work in about 5–7 days, depending on how physical the job is. More physical jobs need longer, agreed individually with the surgical team.

When can I exercise again after liposuction?

Light activity builds back gradually, and full training usually resumes at around 3–4 weeks. The compression garment is worn for 6–8 weeks while the skin retracts and swelling settles.

Is numbness after liposuction normal?

Yes. Temporary numbness or firmness in the treated areas is a normal part of healing and settles over the following weeks to months as the final shape refines.
