The etching
VASER ultrasound
Ultrasound liquefies fat precisely in both the deep and superficial planes — the control needed to etch muscle borders cleanly while sparing nerves and vessels.
High-Definition Body Sculpting · Abu Dhabi & Dubai
Abdominal etching is high definition liposuction of the abdomen: instead of simply thinning the fat layer, the fat is sculpted along the borders of the abdominal muscles so the definition underneath shows. In Abu Dhabi, Dr. Paulo Michels performs it with VASER, real-time ultrasound and plasma — for men and women from Dubai and across the UAE.

Overview
Abdominal etching is the defining step of high definition liposuction (HD lipo). Standard liposuction aims to make an area slimmer; etching aims to make it defined. The fat over the abdomen is not just reduced — it is sculpted along the borders of the rectus abdominis and the obliques, so the muscle definition underneath becomes visible: the six-pack lines, the oblique taper and the lower-abdominal “V”.
Etching reveals and enhances the muscle you already have — it does not build strength. Where a muscle needs more volume, your own purified fat can be grafted into it — the abdominal muscles, chest or deltoids — for deeper definition and a stronger frame that still looks natural.
Everything is done with VASER, under real-time ultrasound guidance, with subdermal plasma tightening the skin onto the new contour. Body contouring of this kind is the field in which Dr. Paulo Michels received the Gold Medal, Best Body Contouring — World Plastic Surgery Olympiads 2025 (ISAPS, Singapore).
The vocabulary
The three phrases overlap but are not the same thing. Here is what each one actually describes.
Sculpting the fat along the borders of the abdominal muscles — the six-pack lines, the obliques and the lower-abdomen “V” — so the definition shows through the skin.
The overall approach: working precisely in both the deep and superficial fat layers with VASER to reveal athletic anatomy rather than simply flatten it. Etching is its abdominal centrepiece.
Treating the torso circumferentially in one session — abdomen, waist, flanks and lower back — so the contour is continuous from every angle. Often combined with etching for a complete result.
The key decision
It comes down to the finish you want: simply slimmer, or visibly defined. Here is the honest comparison.
| Standard liposuction | HD liposuction (etching) | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Slimmer | Defined & athletic |
| Fat layers treated | Mostly deep | Deep + superficial |
| Muscle borders etched | No | Yes |
| Plasma skin tightening | Case by case | Routine — tight skin keeps lines sharp |
| Muscle augmentation with fat | No | Optional (abs, chest, deltoids) |
| Best for | General contouring | Fit patients who want visible definition |
If you simply want an area smaller, standard liposuction is enough. If you want the athletic finish, HD etching is the technique — decided honestly at consultation.
Inside the procedure
High-definition results live or die by the tools and the precision — three technologies working together.
The etching
Ultrasound liquefies fat precisely in both the deep and superficial planes — the control needed to etch muscle borders cleanly while sparing nerves and vessels.
The safety
Ultrasound lets Dr. Paulo Michels see the muscle layers as he works — essential for accurate etching, and for grafting fat safely when a muscle is augmented.
The skin
Plasma energy makes the skin retract tightly onto the new contour. This matters more in HD than anywhere else, because loose skin blurs the etching.

Candidacy
Good to know
Two versions of the same technique
Yes — the technique is the same, but the finish is tailored completely differently.
The six-pack, the obliques, the serratus and the lower-abdominal “V” — with optional fat grafting to the chest, deltoids and traps for a broader, more powerful frame. The full picture is on the male high-definition liposuction page.
Most women prefer a soft, feminine definition — a defined waist and a subtle centre line — rather than a hard six-pack. The sculpting is tailored from natural to high-definition, always unmistakably feminine. See liposuction for women.
Recovery
HD liposuction is more detailed than standard liposuction, so aftercare matters — the compression garment and lymphatic care protect the definition.
Soreness like a very hard workout, with some fluid drainage that settles quickly. You are up and walking the same day.
Most people return to desk work in about 5–7 days, depending on how physical the job is.
A compression garment (often with foam) is worn for 6–8 weeks to control swelling and keep the etched lines sharp.
Light cardio builds back gradually; full weight training resumes at around 4–6 weeks.
Swelling resolves and the definition sharpens over 3–6 months as the tissues settle.
FAQ
Abdominal etching is high definition liposuction of the abdomen. Instead of only reducing the fat layer, the fat is sculpted along the borders of the rectus abdominis and the obliques so the muscle definition underneath becomes visible. It reveals and enhances the muscle you have — it does not build strength.
Etching is the abdominal part of it. High definition liposuction is the broader approach — working in both the deep and superficial fat layers with VASER to reveal athletic anatomy across the abdomen, flanks, chest and back. Abdominal etching is its best-known step.
360 liposuction treats the torso circumferentially in one session — abdomen, waist, flanks and lower back — so the contour is continuous from every angle. It is often combined with abdominal etching, and it is how the waistline is defined rather than just the front of the abdomen.
If the muscle is there and the fat is mostly subcutaneous, yes. VASER etches the fat around the rectus abdominis to reveal the six-pack, and fat grafted into the muscle can make it stand out further. It reveals and enhances muscle — it does not build strength.
Yes — and the level of definition is the woman’s choice. Most prefer a soft, feminine finish: a defined waist and a subtle centre line rather than a hard six-pack. The technique is tailored from natural to fully athletic.
That usually means visceral fat — deep fat around the organs, behind the muscle wall. No liposuction can reach it; it responds only to diet, training and metabolic health. An honest assessment tells you which kind of fat you carry before anything is planned.
The fat cells removed do not return. The fat that remains behaves like the rest of your body, so a stable weight and continued training keep the definition looking its best; significant weight gain can soften it.
